Personality: Yanli at her core is kind and gentle, but she's far from weak, even if she comes off as as unassuming. She cares deeply for her family and the people around her but she's also more than willing to step in when it comes to defending or protecting them. She's something of a peacemaker, and works best in a supporting role rather than center stage.
She's a stabilizing force in the lives of those around her and her kindness and humility tend to endear her to people, although the latter is a point of contention in her own family. Yanli is comfortable with domestic work and doesn't comport herself as the daughter of a sect which does seem to irritate her mother at times. However, she does seem to enjoy cooking and preparing food.
She tends to try to keep her actual pain hidden though, to keep from burdening those around her, instead looking for ways to support them. But as stable and resilient as she is, Yanli can be stubborn and reckless when it comes to her family and trying to protect or look after them. This is shown more than once in the novel and more specifically, is what leads to her losing her life.
She may not be as overtly combative as her mother but Yanli is definitely her mother's daughter and more than capable of standing up for what she thinks is right, stepping in to defuse a situation with her brother when she sees it's getting out of hand, but also taking up for him in the process. She's loyal and has a core of steel that keeps her going even in the face of heartbreak
In summary, and how I intend to play her on the train, Jiang Yanli is a quiet kind girl with a big heart who enjoys helping people and uses service to distract herself from other issues in her life. She's not blind to the problems around her and will step in if someone she cares about is being targeted. She's basically a quintessential big sister type and that's going to be my focus in playing her.
